Cubs host Rockies in NL Wild Card Game

Tuesday, October 2nd kicks off the MLB postseason.

At 8 PM EST on Oct. 2nd, the Colorado Rockies take on the Chicago Cubs. The winner of the game will take on the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.

Both teams have been very impressive on both ends of the ball but came up just short of winning the division.

The Cubs took on the Milwaukee Brewers and lost 3-1 as Corey Knebel (4-3) received the win, pitching one inning, allowing zero hits and recording one strikeout.

The Dodgers, on the other hand, hosted the Colorado Rockies and walked away as division winners after a 5-2 victory. Walker Buehler (8-5) received the win, pitching just over six innings while striking out three batters.

Colorado Rockies:

Kyle Freeland MLB
On the mound for the Rockies is left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland.

Freeland is riding a 17-7 record into the postseason with a 2.85 ERA for the Rockies.

Throughout the season, Freeland has portrayed his consistency and velocity as he recorded a total of 173 strikeouts.

Both his ERA and wins this season lead the Colorado Rockies organization. His ERA and total wins also rank him within the Top 10 in the league.

Right-handed pitcher Wade Davis has had a phenomenal season in the Rockies bullpen this season. Throughout the season, Davis recorded 43 saves and a 4.13 ERA alongside 78 strikeouts.

Offensively, the Rockies are led by Nolan Arenado. Arenado has been a force at the plate and has managed to record some impressive numbers this season.

Arenado currently leads all three batting categories within the Rockies organization with a .297 batting average, 38 HRs, and 110 RBIs.

His season totals have been impressive throughout the course of the season and his ability has proven to ignite other members of the Rockies organization.

One of the members ignited by the offensive presence from Arenado is shortstop Trevor Story. Story has maintained a .291 batting average alongside 37 HRs and 108 RBIs this season.

Chicago Cubs:

Jon Lester MLB.jpg
Taking the mound for the Cubs is left-hander Jon Lester.

Lester has had a stellar season for the Cubs this season. Throughout the season, Lester has held an 18-6 record alongside a 3.32 ERA. However, like I mentioned about Freeland, the Cubs ace have proven his ability to cross the plate and dominate the strike zone.

Lester has recorded an impressive 149 strikeouts this season for Chicago.

Lester is familiar with the postseason. Lester has appeared in 25 postseason games throughout his career and manages a 2.55 ERA.

Offensively, the Chicago Cubs have been led by Javier Baez.

Baez has been a force for the Cubs not only driving in runs but also blasting moonshots throughout the season.

His physical ability at the plate has proven his dominance which paid off as Baez leads the Cubs in both the home runs and RBI categories. Baez has recorded an NL leading 111 RBIs this season alongside an impressive 34 HRs for Chicago. Alongside Baez, the Cubs have had help from Ben Zobrist this season.

Zobrist has recorded a .305 batting average this season but has managed just nine home runs and 58 RBIs.

Prediction: Rockies 7 – Chicago 4
