Can Syndergaard Spoil the Phillies Chances at the Playoffs?

On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Phillies will complete their three-game series against the New York Mets.

The Mets managed to take game one by a score of 9-4 behind a big performance from Michael Conforto, who finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and six RBIs.

The Mets currently hold a 70-80 record which places them 13 games back from the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves. However, through the last 10 games, the Mets have looked rather impressive with a 7-3 record during that span.

The Philadelphia Phillies, on the other hand, are currently fighting for a wild-card position in the National League. The Phillies possess a 76-73 record but through the last 10 games, the club has gone 3-7.

The Phillies are six games out of the final wild-card spot as the Diamondbacks, Rockies, Cardinals, and Brewers are all ahead of the club with the Cardinals and Brewers holding the final two positions.

Prior to this series, the two clubs met on September 5th for another three-game series in which the Mets won the final two games by a score of 10-5 and 6-4.

New York Mets:

Taking the mound for the New York Mets will be right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

Syndergaard is currently 12-3 this season with a 3.26 ERA. Throughout the total 135.1 innings pitched this season, Syndergaard has successfully struck out a total of 138 batters.

Depending on how Syndergaard does during his performance, the Mets look to relieve pitcher Robert Gsellman to seal the game. Gsellman has 11 saves on the season for the Mets with a 3.97 ERA and 67 strikeouts.

Two impressive players at the plate this season for the Mets are outfielders Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo.

Conforto has been red hot as of recently and his streak will only continue. Conforto is currently leading the Mets in both home runs (26) and RBIs (75).

Nimmo, on the other hand, leads the Mets with a .266 batting average this season. Nimmo has recorded 47 RBIs along with 17 HRs for the club.

Both Conforto and Nimmo have been viable players on both sides of the ball this season for the Mets and at only 25 years old, both players will continue to find their stride within a rising squad.

Philadelphia Phillies:

On the rubber for the Phillies is right-handed pitcher Zach Eflin.

Eflin currently holds a 10-7 record this season with a 4.26 ERA for the Phillies. During the 120.1 innings, Eflin has pitched this season, he has successfully been able to strike out a total of 111 batters.

If the Phillies elect to choose a relieve pitcher late in the game, right-handed pitcher Seranthony Dominguez would be an intriguing option. Dominquez currently has 14 saves this season which places him within the Top 25 in the league. Along with the saves, Dominguez has a 3.23 ERA along with successfully striking out 68 batters this season.
Alongside a solid pitching performance from the Phillies throughout most of the season, the club has also had some impressive offense from the plate from guys like Rhys Hoskins and Cesar Hernandez.

Hoskins currently leads the Phillies in HRs (31) and RBIs (91) this season. The stats have been a proven indicator of how aggressive Hoskins has been from the plate throughout the season.

Hernandez, on the other hand, leads the Phillies with a .255 batting average. But along with a decent batting average, Hernandez has launched 13 home runs and successfully batted in a total of 54 runs.

Prediction: Phillies 6 – Mets 5
