Tonight the New York Mets travel to Los Angles as they take part in a three game series against the Dodgers.
The Dodgers are currently on a role, winning eight out of their last nine games. The latest loss coming during the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-1, on August 30th.
Both teams are similar records as the Dodgers are 38-34 at home, but carry an overall record of 75-62 which currently places them in first place within the West division of the National League.
The Mets on the other hand are 33-35 on the road and hold a 61-75 overall record behind the Nationals, Phillies and Braves within the East divison of the American League.
New York Mets:
Taking the mound for the Mets is right-handed pitcher Jason deGrom. This season, deGrown holds an 8-8 record with a 1.68 ERA which is No. 1 within the MLB. deGrom also stands within the Top 5 in total strikeouts with 224. As of this season, deGrom has shown how dominant his pitching arsenal can be as he possess a four seam fastball averaging 97 MPH and a slider that averages over 90 MPH. Not only that, but deGrom also controls an impressive change-up, sinker and curve ball this season. deGrom generates more misses from his four seam fastball then he does with any other pitch. His ability to throw extremely hard with little to no movement is extremely impressive and will continue to dominant in the Mets rotation for the remainder of the season.
Per MLB Stat of the Day, deGrom against .500+ teams has pitched 128.2 innings with an ERA of 1.47 and currently averages 11 strikeouts a game.
One name to watch out for tonight against the Dodgers is left fielder Michael Conforto. Conforto is currently batting .232 with 55 RBIs, 20 HRs and two steals. During his career against Alex Wood, Conforto is 1-for-6 with two strikeouts.
Center fielder Austin Jackson is currently batting .200 during his career with Alex Wood as he is 2-for-10 with four RBIs.
Los Angeles Dodgers:
Taking the mound for the Dodgers tonight is left-handed pitcher Alex Wood. This season, Wood is 8-6 with a 3.42 ERA which ranks him within the Top 25 in the league.
Although Wood’s only possess eight wins for the Dodgers this season, he has had an impressive season with 122 strikeouts through 139.1 innings pitched. Woods has not pitched many fastballs this season as he is primarily using pitches such as a sinker, slider and change-up. Due to his ability to throw a solid sinker with little sinking ability, if batters can connect will result in a flyball situation.
His change-up often turns into ground ball play situations and his slider has more two play movement then any pitch I have seen lately.
One name to keep track of tonight against the Mets will be second baseman Max Muncy. During Muncy’s career against deGrom, Muncy has gone 1-for-2 with an RBI. However, during the regular season, Muncy is currently batting .257 with 31 home runs and 60 RBIs for the Dodgers.
This series could end up turning into a good one if the Mets can manage to hold the Dodgers from scoring late in the game like they have done during recent series.
