Tonight the Colorado Rockies take on the San Diego Padres. After a rough season for the Padres last year when Clayton Richards allowed 240 hits and had a 4.79 ERA, tonight he will be taking the mound with a 1.29 ERA. Jon Gray will be taking the mound for the Rockies and during his last start against the Diamonds he allowed 6 H and 3 ER through 4 IP.
Richards is 2-2 against the Rockies and has a 6.75 ERA in those 4 starts. During the 22 2/3 innings Richard pitched against the Rockies he allowed just 38 hits. However, the last two starts which took place at Coors Field, Richard had an ERA of 13.03 and gave up 15 runs. Richard is a much better pitcher at Petco Field posting a 3.2 ERA in 74 games.
As for the Rockies, having Jon Gray on the mound is a different story who is 2-2 in his 5 starts at Petco Park and as posted a 3.21 ERA. Gray had the opportunity to pitch against the Padres and allowed just 5 hits in 6 innings. During the 2017 season , Gray was 2-0 against the Padres and pitched 17 innings and had 22 strikeouts.
Both Richard and Gray are both looking to receive their first wins of the season after both starting for their home openers.
The Padres received their first win of the season on Tuesday against the Rockies with the help of Christian Villanueva who had 3 HR and 5 RBIs. Because of the help from Villanueva the Padres defeated the Rockies 8-4.
During Richards first start against the Brewers, he allowed just 6 hits and had 4 strikeouts in 6 innings but would eventually fall to the Brewers 2-1 in 12 innings. Gray lasted only 4 innings against the Diamondbacks because he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and walked 3 batters.
Both pitchers look to bounce back following their first games of the season.
Key for a Padres Victory:
The Padres need to keep the bats hot as they look to continue the momentum moving forward. The Padres had 8 hits against the Rockies and they can be aggressive running bases. Defense and good pitching from Richards will also be key against the Rockies.
Key for a Rockies Victory:
Gray will have to continue his dominance on the mound against the Padres. The infield is pretty solid for the Rockies and not to mention those players are also pretty good hitters along with Blackmon in CF the Rockies will have red hot bats against Richard.
